Goodbye, Little Gracie.

Our hearts are broken. My sister left for the Bridge last night. Feisty to the end, she never let on how very sick she was prior to the previous two days, and even then, she was pretty much her usual self. Even Dr. R was amazed by the dire results of her tests; PQ was in acute renal failure. It was the last thing we were expecting. My mom is devastated.

We love you, little Peelet. Five years with us was way too short a time, but we know we'll meet up again some day.

  39. Oh dear William and Mom and Family, we are so, so sad to read about your sweet sister. The PQ was a beautiful and precious girlcat, and the Human and I are sorrier than we can say that she ran off so suddenly. She had a purrfect life with you. We think Olivia was surely there to greet her just the other side of the Bridge, and know that Gracie will be safe with her.

But oh, William and Russell and Caroline, Do you three ever have a big responsibility to take care of your Mom for the next bit while she is feeling so very sad about your sister. The Humans don't understand or accept these things as well as we kitties do and they can stay sad for a long time. Be sure to gather round and purr on her a lot in the coming weeks and we'll keep checking in on her also. XOXOXOXOXO

  55. Hi Buddy, The Human and I have spent a lot of our day thinking about Mom and her Three Musketeers. I think even Pretzel and Screamoline will have to declare a truce to purr your Mom through this second heartache -- Gracie was a sweet little girl and you and your Mom gave her a terrific life with you--I wish every kitty could be as cared for and loved as your kitty family is.

The thing about sudden departures for the Bridge, be they Feline or Human, is that there's not much suffering for the kitty or person whose time it is to move On. The Human's mother left after quite a short illness of only a few days' duration. The Human (now, 30 years later) is grateful that her mom didn't suffer much, but it was hellish for her and her dad back then. The Humans like to have a little time to prepare themselves for things. They aren't as good as accepting the ebb and flow of life as we are, and that's why we have to take care of them when they really need the purrs. I know your Mom will feel better when you kids are close by. XOXOXOXO

Reading Spitty's comment, I wanted to add something: I lost Chumley very unexpectedly the night of January 24, 2007. He had a blood clot and there was nothing the emerg vet could do. The shock was terrible and it took a long, long time to get past his death. He *did* suffer at the end, terribly, from the time he threw the clot to the time I got him to the vet clinic (after hours).

After that I always wondered which was worse: Losing someone dear suddenly, or losing someone after a long, lingering illness.

Then Annie got sick a few years after that and she slowly declined, for seemingly unknown reasons. I won't go there right now. But in the end I had to make the merciful decision to let her go and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do so far in my life.

Looking back, for me the long, lingering illness was harder. I hated having to play god, even though Annie clearly needed to be helped to the Bridge. The stress of trying this, that and the other thing at the vet clinic for her, with nothing seeming to help, was awful.

I hope that in time you find peace and perhaps even are able to be thankful (if I may use that word) that Gracie didn't slowly linger and suffer.

Lots of hugs and universal Light.

    Kim
