Dear Friends.

Your compassion over the loss of Caroline has meant so very much to us. We appreciate and treasure every word. Thank you all, old and new friends alike.

The house is so quiet now, and, of course, emptier too. Ivan still looks for Caroline every morning, wondering if at last she has outsmarted him in finding a new secret place to hide. And in the evenings, the boys leave the space she occupied on the couch empty, just in case. Izzy has tried to engage Elliott in the nightly face washing ritual, but he knows it won't even come close. And I walk the house alone now, with no little cat following.

I came down with a miserable cold the day after she left, the first in five or six years. That too is slowing our getting back to things, but know that our hearts have been deeply touched by your kindness in helping us say goodbye.

  1. Caroline was such a character and the boys are sure to miss her as much as you do.
It will take time and things will never be the same, but a new normal will eventually establish, although we never truly stop mourning them.
Hugs for you, and I hope your cold is better by now.

  8. We are glad to see you, but sorry you have been down with all kinds of miseries. It is sweet that the boys miss her too--it's a big adjustment for all of you. I am glad the trio of boycats are there for you and I am sure they're a comfort....but Caroline was one of a kind. And gosh, now you're the only girl! It makes me think about girl cats. My last girlkitty, BooBoo, crossed the bridge in December 1989, at 19. It was just a couple of months after the earthquake. I was still at work and by the time I managed to get home it was maybe two hours later. My apartment was trashed--stuff broken, smashed, and plaster fallen off the walls and ceiling. But in the exact center of my bed was BooBoo, covered in plaster dust, sound asleep. I thought she might be dead; in fact, she was fine but I don't think she even woke up during all that awful quake. There was no dust under her--just a perfectly untouched circle where she'd been napping. Ah, I miss her still! I need a girl again ;-) XOXOXO

  12. Very heartfelt words. I always find that it's almost as though the initial loss isn't as hard as the daily things you notice missing in your life without them-like missing her following you around the house. Thoughts are with you!

  14. It takes time for everyone to adjust. When my Smokey died, Felix searched the house for her for about two weeks. He slowly realized she was nowhere to be found. Hopefully your new routine will begin to feel like the new normal. Caroline will always be in your heart. Purrs.
