Color Change.

So a few weeks ago I talked my mom into putting out the hummingbird feeder. I know there are a bunch of hummingbirds around here because even if I can't always see them I can hear them. And I figured they'd be hungry.

Mom reminded me that for two summers now they've never come to the feeder, no matter that we've tried different feeders and different kinds of nectar. But she put it in one of the cypress trees, the one I can see really really well from my window shelf.

I've watched and watched and watched but no tiny birds have come by. But you know what happened tonight? Mom was reading the paper and I was keeping her company by sitting in the window near her. I was checking out our pretty purple butterfly bush, because another weird thing is that we've had hardly any butterflies this summer. Then, THEN, a hummingbird came by and stopped at the butterfly bush to feed!

Mom told me to stay very quiet and calm so the tiny bird wouldn't get scared and fly away. And it worked! She spent minutes out there and visited every bloom. It was so exciting! And this was way closer than the feeder in the tree, so I got a very close-up view.

So now I wonder if maybe we need to put purple nectar in the feeders. And I wonder what color would the butterflies like to see?

  1. I have a question....what is a sigh priss tree? Is it like a pine tree? Is it sad?

Momma had a sad thing happen. There was a tiny baby hummingbird that was sick and she took it and put it in a bed thingy she made and putted it in the shade but it went to Rainbow Bridge anyway or wherever little birdies go. Momma buried it in her flower bed, under a petunia plant. Momma felt bad and Daddy told her she can't save everything!

Thats all for now from the Big Piney Woods where it is so hot Big Foot quite singing.

  2. Hummingbirds sounds so neat. Do they sign or humm? Or do they just drink flower juice? ~Merlin, Shadow, Ko KO

  5. Go figure about those hummingbirds. Sounds like you have picky ones where you live. Our beans said they've never seen any purple juice in a feeder. But then, they don't know everything.

  7. My mom put a hummingbird feeder out again this year, because they keep being drawn to the red birdseed feeder and are disappointed.

We've not seen any come to the hummingbird feeder. And it's a shame...because they are tiny bite-sized birds!

  8. Wow you get real wild life to look at. All I get to look at is an occasional cat that wanders past our back porch and dragon flies. No butterflys and never any hummingbirds.

My 10th birthday was Saturday so Momma gave me a toy that was made from emu feathers on a stick. Yeah right. Nice gesture - not real. I guess it is fun to play with but I'd rather have a real emu to catch. Momma says I am crazy cause emu's are really really big. Well I am big so I want an emu.

  9. This is very exciting Wm! Now you have your own pet hummingbird. There is one that visits our yard sometimes, but he's so quick we have trouble keeping track of him in the trees.

  10. I haven't ever seen a hummingbird. Momma says they come around though. Maybe when they get the yard more done and then they put feeders and stuff to bring birds and butterflies I will know what they are like!

  11. We don't have any hummybirds at our house. We did at the other place tho. We do have goldfinches and red-head finches (don't know their real name). Momma puts out special seeds for them. Maybe we'll try to get a picture of them.

  12. I made DKM put out two feeders because they were fighting over the one. They like all colours at our house because DKM switches it all the time. I like red, she likes green.

    BTW, we posted our nicknames.

  13. We don't have hummingbirds here, so I guess I'll never get to see one unless they decide to take me to Vegas. Fat chance of that! But we do have flamingo birdies here, and I do love thier pinkyness!

  14. Ohh a hummer, I loves them. We have them too and they rarely hit the feeder with the juice but love the plants. So mum has plants that are good for the little hummers and butterflys.

  15. What kind of songs do the hummingbirds hum? I've never seen them so I assume they must sing some songs according to their name, yes?
