You Know How It Is.

So my Mom gets some days off and I thought we were going to catch up on things and relax a bunch. Well, we had several naps and stuff, but really most of it was doing home improvement (::scowl::). So I had to snoopervise while she did the last big thing in the kitchen, which was to reface the cupboard doors. While she wasn't paying attention, I hid one of the new knobs she got and hid it so well that she had to go back to Lowe's (for the 98th time). Well, do you know what happened? She brought a butterfly home for me!

Mom said the butterfly was on the parking lot ground and seemed to be injured. Really I think Mom was just trying to give her a safe place to fly to the Bridge, so she brought her home and let her rest in the room that really is my room but then was Olivia's recuperation room and then Caroline's recuperation room but is now Mom's craft room. I don't know what kind of a butterfly she is, but isn't she pretty?

She had some antennae and wing damage.

See her striped body?

Well, at one point when we went to check on her, she had managed to fly out of the little container and was resting on the floor. Then later, she was in another place and Mom noticed that she'd laid some eggs! By this morning she'd laid eleven eggs and Mom thought maybe she'd be happier having her eggs outside. So Mom put her in the front garden where I can see her from the window. I made sure to have Mom hide her from the sight of that mean cat who visits by fashioning a little rock cave so she can have some peace.

We're going to keep an eye on the eggs she left inside so we can put her babies out to eat and grow when they hatch.

  3. You have such a wonderful, nice, Momma, William! I hope the eggs hatch and the momma bf is OK. There aren't many people who would take care of Gods creatures as well as your momma does.

  4. I'm sorry you didn't get more relaxing done with your Mom. That made my Momma smile when you said you hid that knob so well.

What a pretty butterfly and how awesome that your Mom brought it home to try to help it.

  8. Aww William you're soooo lucky that your mom brought the flutterby inside. Are you guarding the eggs like a good tiny boy? Trixie probably would have ate the flutterby if mom wasn't looking.

  18. What a beautiful butterfly! Mom thought that she would be SO smart and look up that butterfly in her Audubon guide to identify it. But she looked and looked, and she couldn't find one that matched. :(

We're thrilled that we live in a county named for you, "Prince William." Mom thought that it was named for some English prince years ago, but we set the record straight with her.

  19. My Mom says to let your Mom know she's not a butterfly, she's a moth (uhm, the pretty winged thing, not your Mom). Anyway, to be specific, she's a Cecropia moth. http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/5479/
This website has lots of info and also pictures of the kittypillars so your Mom will know not to skwish them when they hatch (they change a lot as they grow). We hope all the eggs hatch out and you have lots more pretty moths to watch next spring :).

  20. Joey, thanks so much! We couldn't find her anywhere (we usually check whatsthatbug.com). I guessed she was a butterfly because of the way she was holding her wings when she was feeling more rested (up, not out). She's still in our garden!
